Maintaining Your Door Locks

How long your locks last are dependent on a number of things. The higher quality of the lock that you purchase, the more likely it will last longer than a cheaper inferior version. If you do purchase an expensive locking system, it would be wise to take care of it so you will get many years of use from it. It does not take much time and effort for this and will make all the difference in the long run.

The first step is to ensure that the locks are fitted correctly from the start so ensure that there is no extra wear and tear on the lock and all is functioning correctly. This should be completed by a qualified and trained locksmith. This will ensure that there are no weak spots that a burglar may be looking for.

Every now and then, give the locks a clean with a clean cloth. Don’t use an old duster though as any dirt and fibres may get caught in the lock.

Try not to slam or bang door, closing them gently will no extra pressure to the lock mechanism and it will lessen the chances of it becoming loose.

Certain locks need some oil from time to time. You can consult with your local locksmith on how to do this correctly and how to not make a mess.

Every now and then, make sure the the screws holding the lock in place are still tight to avoid any malfunction.
